Agus Wijaya: A sight that remains

OPENS SATURDAY 6 DECEMBER

Procession, 2020
#2 (Edition of 3 + 1 NFS AP). $2000

A sight that remains features works by Eora/Sydney-based artist Agus Wijaya. Combining digital media, experimental sculpture and installation, Wijaya’s practice interrogates how identity is constructed and deconstructed through the cultural, historical and personal.

Featuring ‘beings’ with indiscernible expressions, the works allude to a range of cultural practices, traditions and histories, but refute direct reference. Obfuscated under layers of abstraction, some works in A sight that remains are steeped in Indonesia’s fraught, multifaceted postcolonial history, while other works reconfigure identities once imposed on the artist, creating versions both familiar and estranged.
Placed in the window-gallery, these works witness the ever present, looking to and at us as much as we look at them. Their watchfulness place us as active participant and complicit witness, facing the reflected ‘other’ in equal tension; moving between absence and return.

Curated by Joyce Fan. Agus Wijaya is represented by Stanley Street Gallery.
