‘New Faces’ was an Australian talent show that ran on television from 1963 to 1985. The program was an energetic, low-brow combination of all-dancing, all singing form of exhibitionism that rated well with peak hour viewers and advertisers alike. The works in this exhibition resonate with aspects of popular culture in a similar manner, from transgressive drag artists, to actors, models, and those who perform and celebrate their identities through gender or sexuality. ‘New Faces’: come on down and join the fun.

Curated by Mark Bayly, ICONOLOGY: new faces is an exhibition of works collected by Peter Maloney, plus a few of his own (collage pictured).

Peter Maloney (1953-2023) produced a polymorphous body of work across multiple media, including, collage, painting, photography, performance, sound, and video.

In this exhibition, several of his collages and painted photographs are presented with works by his teachers, students, friends, comrades and collaborators, all artists whose work he loved and admired.

Peter was an enthusiastic correspondent with artists from near and far. He was an early adopter of social media. His Bodies in Trouble blog – petermaloney.blogspot.com – is a valuable record of his ideas, activities and the connections he made. On Instagram @peter_maloney_asap he posted regular despatches about his life and practice. It’s there that can be found his generous mentions of other artists and their works as he acquired them, or as an art fan proclaiming how much he loved a painting hanging in his bedroom. Many of these pieces are presented in ICONOLOGY.

The works selected by Mark for ICONOLOGY are portraits. Icons of celebrities, rock n rollers, drag performers, mysterious figures and bodies in trouble.

Mark Bayly was Peter’s partner for 28 years. He has lovingly curated this project, one of many including a forthcoming solo show of Peter’s work at Utopia Art Sydney in 2026.
